T. and I just returned from a highly enjoyable vacation where we got to see and experience many different things (some initial pictures are on facebook). T. has been my best friend for six years now (my wonderful husband for 3 and a half years) and while so much has happened during that time, it all seems remarkably short.

Over the course of this vacation there was inevitably some down time where we did not have access to various touristy things, as the result of being on a plane or a boat, and so I quite happily had time to do some reading that I had not had the time or concentration to do previously. One biography, one memoir, and two books on other topics, each very thought provoking it its own way. As a result I have had many thoughts bouncing around in my head. Some of them are coherent, most of them are not. Certainly none of them could be labeled as new or original, but I suppose I still wanted to write them down (mostly for me, in my own words).

I like to think that due to the experiences I have had during my life that I keep growing in a positive direction, but whether that is simply the product of me basking in the glow of my youthful naiveté or not I suppose only time will tell.

I am a pale white woman whose family has been in America for many generations. It’s not something that I am proud of. It’s not something that I am ashamed of. It simply is, and it certainly does not define me. Of course I find the history of my family interesting, and I love and respect my parents, grandparents etc.. They helped form the culture I grew up in, and without understanding that legacy I cannot even begin to identify the assumptions that were instilled in me from very early on and try to piece together what I agree with and what I do not. This is true for everyone.

I think we all have trigger issues. Things that we hear even the slightest mention of or allusion towards and it triggers a flood of emotion and assumptions where we fill in (the often gaping) holes with sentences that allow us to box in a situation (or a person) when if we where honest with ourselves, or took even a few minutes to actually think about the situation we would realize that we had just made a huge number of logical leaps that could not even begin to be substantiated.

In order to go through life without becoming stark raving mad, it is important to make decisions/judgments about situations (and yes about people), but it is also very important to be aware of the assumptions that you are weighing into those judgments, and allow yourself the freedom to be wrong and revise your opinion as necessary. Certainly people should have the opportunity to defend themselves against any charges made against them. Depriving them of that means you have no other aim than to attack and cause pain, and you certainly have no interest in the truth.

We moved apartments. The new apartment is not too far from the old one, but has much more storage space as well as skylights and large windows. It’s a very pleasant apartment. You don’t need electric light at all until the sun goes down, and natural light always just feels better. We also bought a bed frame and couch so we no longer look quite as much like college students as we used to. The kitchen is larger which makes the boy happy, and he has been busy arranging it to his specifications.

We have also almost finished year two of marital bliss. I am very happily content with my life.

The boy and I will be moving soon to a new apartment that is about twice as big as our current one. I am looking forward to the extra square footage about as much as goldenmist sounds like she is. We seem to collect things the longer we stay in one place :) I know I haven't posted in quite a while so in a quick sum up I finished my masters last March and have been working since January for the local airplane maker. The summers in the northwest are beautiful, if brief by Texas standards.

Unlike Art1m1s this has changed a bit for me, or at least I seem to waffle between INTJ and INFJ depending on the day.

I am apparently difficult to label.

Centrist

You scored 50% Personal Liberty and 45% Economic Liberty!

A centrist believes in moderate government intervention in both personal and economic matters. They tend to be somewhat ambiguous, as they may have the oppurtunity to pick the side of any group surrounding them on any given issue. They generally believe in a moderate social safety net and what they consider to be a balanced stance on personal liberty. Centrists tend to emphasize compromise and cooperation between partisan groups.

After growing up in a country where anyone can mock any of my beliefs (or me personally for that matter) at any given time, and in almost any way they find amusing or pertinent, the “cartoon riots” seem very strange. I understand being unappreciative of the cartoon, but feeling like you needed to go kill someone over it? That strikes me as being a wee bit sensitive. It makes you feel glad to have freedom of speech. So everyone, feel free to make fun me or my beliefs, the worst you’re going to get is a long hearty sigh and an eye roll. I guess I just figured God gave me a sense of humor and he intended for it to be used. In fact having that sense of humor is probably the only way we humans can stand to live with each other for extended periods of time without mass genocide. Not that we have such a good track record on the genocide.

I'm not quite sure this is accurate, but it was amusing.

Gnomes are strange little things. Fascinated with gadgets and shiny things, gnomes are often plotting and planning - but are pretty smart, despite all the explosions.

As a warrior, you like to take charge of things. You feel that you're an important part of what's happening - and if things turn sour, you like to have a very large weapon on hand that you can use to negotiate.

So I know many of you are probably going to disagree with me on this, but I really don’t have an appreciation for protestors. Not that I challenge their right to protest, but it certainly doesn’t do anything to change my mind about issues. Most specifically I take issue with the recent “walk out” of students, where a bunch of high school and college students walked out of their classes at noon to protest the war. Realistically how hard is it to convince a high school kid that they’d rather be out protesting than learning trig? However, wouldn’t the cause of political activism be served at a greater level if said kids were in fact sitting in their respective English classes learning how to format complete sentences that they could then use to bombard their politicians with well thought out and meaningful letters? If nothing else, someone sitting on a street corner with a sign yelling at me simply lets me know that that person is angry about something. It doesn’t even tell me that they really know why they’re angry, because really, sometimes its simply fun to riot, and all young people should do it at least once in their lives so they have a good story to tell their grandchildren.

Graduate school is getting better. The first month was rough, I’m not really sure of all the components that went into making it that way, but it was. Little by little I’ve started enjoying working problems again. Sometimes you just have to hope that being annoyingly persistent and stubborn will compensate for lack of brilliance. The boy and I have joined the bandwagon and gotten netflix. It really is a delightful service, with tomes and tomes of History Channel, A&E, and Biography. So many nummies. Last weekend was the Tsars of Russia. I find watching old history videos comforting in an odd way. They are a tangible reminder that at one point your parents and grandparents were young and stupid as well. It just makes the continuum of life seem more real, and puts things into perspective, or maybe I’m just strange. Well actually I know I’m strange, as my husband just reminded me. We’re odd together, but very happily so.

You scored as Kaylee Frye. The Mechanic. You are a natural mechanic, and you are far too sweet and cheerful to live out here. How you can see the good in everyone around you boggles the mind occationally. Still you don't seem to be any crazier than that, and it is a nice kinda crazy.

I can’t say that I have anything else to say that hasn’t already been said. He could certainly be a contentious individual, but he was always nice to me. Yesterday was a very sad depressing day. If it would mean anything at all to you, say a prayer for Joe that he find peace.

Pandora has decided she's a climbing fuzzy and likes to perch herself on my shoulder while I read. We've been reading statistics books together.
You scored as Miss Zambia. You are Miss ZAMBIA. Your business-saavy demeanor and your ability to help others through listening makes you stand out from the rest of the crowd. You like to do charity work even though it is not expected of you. Even though you possess all the qualities of a perfect Miss Universe, it is not enough to land you a spot into the Top15. . Though you do not become a semi-finalist, you are adored by many people around the world.

The boy and I have recently discovered the pitfalls of marital gaming. I got him to play Diablo II multiplayer with me. Which while it has been large amounts of fun, seems to make him much like his character Fred the Pithy, a barbarian. I have however been playing as the druid, who as luck would have it, has a nice vine that reaches out and kill all things in its path. This has led to Fred the pity not gaining as many experience points as he seems to think he deserves for being his large brawny self. As such, I am 2 levels ahead of my husband, and he seems to believe this is the result of some mysterious cheating. Ahh the big dumb barbarian. He is kinda cute when he gets all uppity though, and barbarians are hot, so I suppose it all works out.

The boy and I are 99% moved from his old apartment to our new one. Moving is a highly annoying task as always, but we both are really enjoying the new apartment, despite the inevitable sticker shock of moving from the Midwest to the west coast. However, having the luxuries of a washer, dryer, dishwasher and garbage disposal makes me a very happy girl indeed. We have two guinea pigs, Mephisto (Meep) and Pandora (Pan). They also make me exceedingly happy. They really are very sweet little creatures, and while my biological clock is in no way shape or form ticking, they do fulfill a little emotional niche. Otherwise, we really are enjoying our happily boring life. I’ve discovered I like sushi, and there is plenty of it to be found in Seattle. Life is pretty wonderful right now.

I know I haven’t updated in awhile, but everything has been going just fine. One bridal shower down, one to go. I admit I had fun. I wasn’t sure if I was going to or not, but to add to the enjoyment two families I’ve known for a very long time showed up, and that was pretty nice. My friend Michelle, who I’ve known since age five, and her mother came. I’ve always been very fond of her. She recently finished her associate’s degree and is thinking about becoming a teacher. Also, our old next door neighbors from when we lived in Richardson came. Mrs. Ortiz taught me Spanish, and they are just in general very neat people. I’m falling in love with Seattle. It really is amazingly beautiful, and the number of hike/bike trials is very nice. I’m not sure the locals realize how lucky they are in regards to weather. Yeh, so it rains quite a bit during one season of the year. That’s a small price to pay for having your hot season be in the upper 80s. So says the girl from Houston. The boy and I saw Batman Begins last night. It’s definitely one of the better Batman movies they have made in awhile. Of course, Ras Al Ghul was always my favorite Batman villain, so that helped.

I’m not sure I’m Snape, but on the other hand the description has some truth to it. May I grow up to be less bitter than he is.

Season = Winter
You're Most Like The Season Winter ...

You're often depicted as the cold, distant season.
But you're incredibly intelligent, mature and
Independant. You have an air of power around
you - and that can sometimes scare people off.
You're complex, and get hurt easily - so you
rarely let people in if you can help it. You
can be somewhat of a loner, but just as easily
you could be the leader of many. You Tend to be
negative, and hard to relate to, but you give
off a relaxed image despite being insecure -
and secretly many people long to be like you,
not knowing how deep the Winter season really
is.

Well done... You're the most inspirational of
seasons :)

Today (well technically yesterday) was my birthday. It was nice, saw a movie with mom, had a nice dinner, and was spoiled with such gifts as chocolate and an external hard drive. My family seemed to find amusement in watching a slightly tipsy me (from dinner) attempting to manage the screws on the hard drive case. I was slightly less than skilled in this area. I did however greatly miss the boy. I’ve been going through a bunch of my old stuff that got left at my parent’s house. It’s weird to look back at things you did earlier in life. Sometimes it all seems vaguely like a dream. It is also hard to sort through things to give away. There are so many items that you know you will never use again, but they bring back memories of specific event, and you selfishly want to hold onto them.
